The Effect of Chemically Accelerated Vibratory Finishing on GearMetrology Lane Winklemann, Mark Michaud, Gary Sroka, REM Chemicals,Inc., Joseph Arvin, Arrow Gear Company, Ali Manesh, Power TransferSystems Manufacturing Chemically accelerated vibratory finishing isa commercially proven process that is capable of isotropicallysuperfinishingmetals to an Ra < 1.0 ìin. Gears have lessfriction, run significantly cooler and have lower noise andvibration when this technology is applied. Scuffing, contactfatigue (pitting), and bending fatigue are also reduced oreliminated both in laboratory testing and field trials. This paperpresents studies done on aero- space Q13 spiral bevel gears showingthat the amount of metal removed to superfinish the surface is bothnegligible and controllable.Media selection andmetalremovalmonitoring procedures are described ensuring uniform surfacefinishing, controllability and preservation of gear metrology.ISBN: 1-55589-801-7
