Micropitting is an area of gear failure that influences gearnoise and transmission error. This paper outlines an approach toanalysing micropitting by looking at the critical factors for agiven gear design. A practical procedure, which incorporates athree-dimensional spring model, was used to predict themicropitting wear rate and the position that wear would take placeon test gear pairs. Case studies have been included that directlycompare the predicted levels of micropitting with those actuallymeasured. A simplified formulation suitable for manual calculationsare also discussed.
