Powder metallurgy (PM) enables production of components withcomplex geometries such as gears. The cost effective use of PMcomponents in automotive applications has showed a continuousgrowth. This growth is due to the the net shape capability, whilemaintaining performance. Gears for automotive applications arecomplex in shape and require both geometrical accuracy and highmechanical performance in terms of tooth durability. By utilizingselective densification of the teeth, these performancerequirements can be met at a low cost. In this paper a PM processconsisting of compaction, sintering, surface densification, andfinally heat treatment has been studied to assess the feasibilityof production. Helical and spur gears were used where thedensification, as well as the resulting gear quality anddurability, were tested.
