The most common failure mechanism of highly stressed casecarburized gears is micropitting (grey staining). The standard FZGgear test (FVA Work Sheet 54) is generally used to determine themicropitting load capacity of gear lubricants. In recent years, FZGgear testing has also demonstrated its usefulness for evaluatingthe effect of superfinishing on increasing the micropitting loadcapacity of gears. Results from the Technical University of Munichwere previously presented in Part 1 of this paper. Part II willpresent the results of Ruhr University Bochum. Both research groupsconcluded that superfinishing is one of the most powerfultechnologies for significantly increasing the load carryingcapacity of gear flanks.
