Minimizing gear mesh friction losses is important if plantoperating costs and environmental impact are to be minimized. Thispaper describes how a validated 3D FEA and TCA can be used tooptimize cylindrical gears for low friction losses withoutcompromising noise and power density. Some case studies arepresented and generic procedures for minimizing losses areproposed. Future development and further validation work isdiscussed.
