The gearing industry has developed many unique measuringtechniques for the production control of their products. Eachtechnique has inherent advantages and limitations which should beconsidered by designers and manufacturers when selecting their use.Double flank composite inspection, (DFCI) is one such techniquethat can functionally provide quality control results of test gearsquickly and easily during manufacturing. The successful use of DFCIrequires careful planning from product design, through master geardesign and gage control methods in order to achieve the desiredresult in an application. This document explains the practicalconsiderations in the use of double flank testing for themanufacturing control of spur, helical, and crossed axis helicalgearing including: oa general description of double flankinspection equipment including an explanation of what can bemeasured. orecommendations on practical master gear design. othecalculation of tight mesh center distance and test radius limits.othe resulting backlash that can be anticipated in gear meshesbased on applying double flank tolerances in a design. oinitial andongoing statistical techniques in double flank testing and how theycan be practically used to improve gear quality. odouble flank gagemeasurement system analysis including case studies of gagerepeatability and reproducibility (R&R) and uncertaintyanalysis.
