Bearing failures in wind turbine gearboxes were investigated androlling contact fatigue tests to reproduce them using ahydrogen-charge method were conducted. Two main failure modes inwind turbine gearbox bearings were white structure flaking andaxial cracking, which were involving a microstructural change. Bothfailure modes can be reproduced by using specimens charged withhydrogen. Operating conditions, which can induce hydrogengeneration from lubricant and penetration of the bearing steel werediscussed. Effects of bearing material on white structure flakinglife were suggested as one of the countermeasures.
