A thermally coupled efficiency model for a simple dip-lubricatedgearbox is presented. The model includes elastohydrodynamicfriction losses in gear teeth contacts as well as bearing, seal andchurning losses. An iterative numerical scheme is used to fullyaccount for the effects of contact temperature, pressure and shearrates on EHL friction. The model is used to predict gearboxefficiency with selected transmission oils whose properties werefirst obtained experimentally through rolling-sliding tribometertests under representative contact conditions. Although the gearboxwas designed using standard methods against a fixed rating, themodel was used to study efficiency over a much wider range ofconditions. Results are presented to illustrate the relativecontribution of different sources of energy loss and the effect oflubricant properties on the overall gearbox efficiency undervarying operating conditions.
