A gearmotor is defined as the combination of an enclosed geardrive and an electric motor with the frame of one componentsupporting the other, and with the motor shaft common with ordirectly coupled to the input pinion shaft. A gearmotor is furtherdefined as any electro-mechanical gear drive combination designedand rated in accordance with Standard AGMA 460.04, “Practice forGearmotors.”
This standard is applicable to single and multiple stagegearmotors with spur, helical, herringbone and bevel types ofgearing arranged in a fashion such that the output shaft is eitherconcentric with, parallel to, or at a right angle to the electricmotor shaft.
This standard is limited to gearmotors having an electric motorspeed of 3600 rpm or less or an input pinion pitch line velocitynot exceeding 5000 fpm.
Purpose
The purpose of this standard IS to list and classify thecharacter of the load in various applications, so that a propergearmotor can be se lected for a given service.
