A program to experimentally and theoretically studyfundamentalmechanisms of gear dynamic behavior is being conductedat the NASA Lewis Research Center in supportof a joint researchprogram between NASA and the U. S. Army. This paper presentstheresults ofdynamic tooth-fillet straingage measurementsfromtheNASA gear-noise rig, and it inlroduces a technique for usingthese measurementsto separate the normal and tangential (friction)components of the load at the tooth contact
