Proper hardness of a gear, bothin the tooth and in the body is becoming increasingly criticalsince load carrying capacity is dependent on hardness. The scope ofthis paper is limited to the most common methods of heat treatingsteel gearing; however, there are many methods of heat treatment inwide use throughout the industry.
