There is a gear geometry variation, called “hidden runout”,which resembles runout in it’s effect on transmission error and theresulting vibration, noise and positional accuracy of a drivetrain, but which is not revealed in the standard runoutmeasurements by ball-check or double flank composite testing. Thispaper describes this often unrecognized inspection methods than canbe used to illustrate the manufacturing and inspection issues.
