In star epicyclic gearboxes, low frequency subsynchronous (belowturbine speed) vibrations can be predominant. Turbo-generator gearunit testing shows that these low frequency vibrations may occureven when the rotating components are balanced precisely. In starepicyclic gearboxes of Stoeckicht design, splined couplings betweenthe ring gears and output shaft are used to float the ring gearsfor load sharing. The sub-synchronous vibrations that arise fromsuch components are transmitted along with the mesh frequencyvibrations to the turbine rotor bearings. When the amplitude levelsof these vibrations and their harmonics exceed a certain limit, thelife of these bearings is significantly reduced. To reduce thevibrations from the dynamic eccentricity of ring gears and splinedcouplings the design is changed.
