New relationships for involute spur gear geometry are introducedand integrated with new methods of correlating lubricant tractionand windage test data. Compact math models for lubricant densityand viscoSity under contact prtssun are proposed. A modem approachto dimensional anaiysis is introduced to characterize lubricanttraction data and gear windage data with dimensionless terms whichapply to gear systems which may have aconfiguration and/or sizedifferent from those tested. Finally, system considerations foroptimal gearbox efficiency arc proposed.
