Purpose.

The standard practices established in this document providemeans of obtaining uniformity in the preparation and maintenance ofNational Aerospace Standards prepared in inch systems of units andshall be adhered to insofar as practical. For preparation andmaintenance of metric unit documents, see NAS10000.

Classification

Document Classification. National Aerospace Standards documentsprepared in accordance with this standard practice shall beclassified as one of the following:

Part Standard. A standard which completely defines a stockabledetail or assembly with respect to generic names (Nut, Bolt, Clamp,etc.), material, finish, size, shape and tolerance.

Standard Practice. A standard setting forth drafting convention,symbols, practices, etc; inspection methods, procedures, orstandards; equivalent parts, processes, or standards (by means ofcomparison table); or standard terminology and definitions.

Design Standard. A standard depicting standardized features ofdesign such as shape, controlling dimensions, tolerances, clearancedimensions, installation methods and requirements, engineeringdesign considerations, and engineering requirements formanufacturing processes.

Specification. A standard which determines the technicalrequirements of a standard part, or establishes the standards forwork to be accomplished, in general describing the processes ofoperation, quality of materials, and giving information notnormally contained on related standard drawings.

Requirement Identifier. The requirements defined in thisstandard practice shall be identified by the requirementidentifying numbers derived as shown in 5.2.2, 5.3.2, and5.4.2.
