Purpose of this Characteristic
This document sets forth the desired characteristics of aMulti-Mode Landing System Receiver (MMR) intended for installationin all types of commercial transport aircraft. The intent of thisdocument is to provide general and specific guidance for thedevelopment and installation of the MMR primarily for airline use.This characteristic describes the desired operational capability ofthe equipment, the standards necessary to ensureinterchangeability, form factor, and pin assignments.
AEEC initiated the development of this characteristic as a meansto satisfy the following high-level goals:
a. Improve existing Instrument Landing System (ILS) capabilityby providing means to satisfy ICAO Annex 10 RF immunityrequirements in the near term.
b. Provide optional Microwave Landing System (MLS) capability inthe form of an ILS look-alike, in the near term.
c. Provide a foundation for developing Global NavigationSatellite System (GNSS) landing capability.
