Purpose of This Document
This document contains the physical form and fit dimensions, theelectrical interface definition, and a description of thefunctions, operations, and interfaces of the CommunicationsManagement Unit (CMU) Mark 2.
The CMU Mark 2 is used to provide management and access to thevarious datalink networks and services available to the aircraft.The CMU Mark 2 may also host various applications related todatalink, including both Company and Air Traffic Services. A briefwhite paper on the role of the CMU Mark 2 in Communications,Navigation, and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) isprovided in Appendix A.
The CMU Mark 2 is defined in terms of capability levels. Thereare two classes of capabilities, Levels 0 through 2 definecommunications service capabilities. Levels A through D definesapplication capabilities, see Section 4.1. The CNS/ATM definitionis still in progress.
The CMU levels 0 and A definition has been completed. Futuresupplements will complete the definition of the other levels. Thetext for levels 1 through 2 and levels B through D ispreliminary.
This document assumes that the architecture of the airborne CMUMark 2, is as shown in the system block diagrams included asattachments. These architectures are consistent with guidelinesprovided by ARINC Report 660A: CNS/ATMAvionics, Functional Allocation and RecommendedArchitectures.
