Purpose: This document is intended to provide design guidancefor the development and installation of an Enhanced Airborne FlightRecorder (EAFR). The EAFR standard addresses combinations of any orall of the following in a single Line Replaceable Unit (LRU), aDigital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) function, a Cockpit VoiceRecorder (CVR) function, a data link recording function, and animage recording function. This document does not address theoverall flight data recorder system requirements but considersinterface and system standards. This document does not replaceARINC Characteristic 747 which defines DFDRs. This documentaddresses the details of the voice recording function but does notdescribe the audio distribution system. It does not replace ARINCCharacteristic 757 which defines CVRs. The EAFR may be used in asingle or dual-redundant installation as permitted by regulation. Both configurations are addressed in this Characteristic. Thedocument provides guidance and information to ensurecustomer-controlled interchangeability of equipment in a standardaircraft installation. Further, it assists in functionalverification and in data retrieval.
COMMENTARY: Over the years several nomenclatures have been usedfor flight data recorders often to differentiate the technologyused. From this point forward, this document will use the genericterm Flight Data Recorder (FDR) to remove any reference to thetechnology or recording medium used.
This specification addresses the Avionics Full Duplex SwitchedEthernet in numerous sections. Reference is made to this by the useof the term AFDXTM which is a trademark of Airbus Industries.
