System Design

The fundamental element of a reliable, functional aerospacefiber optic application is the system design. It is the systemdesigners’ task to define the most efficient and cost effectivemethods of transmitting the optical signal, while providing aphysical layer with sufficient performance, reliability, andavailability for the application.

This document provides guidance on key areas of system design toachieve this goal:

• Section 3.0, System Definition, describes the systemrequirements information that is necessary to begin the process andthe topology options available to a system designer.

• Section 4.0, System Design, describes the process that asystem designer should go through when deciding on a network designor topology for a particular application including the procedure ofpower budgeting.

• Section 5.0, Component Selection, covers the actual hardwareoptions that the designer will need to select.

Topology design, power budgeting, and component selection arediscussed in that order but in reality, system design is aniterative process and all three topics should be considered inparallel.

Additional sections provide guidance on system designconsiderations for aircraft installation and safety.

Information defined in the ASSC/120/2/81: Guide to Avionic FiberOptic System Design document and European Norm EN 4533: FiberOptics Handbook has been used extensively in the preparation ofthis document.

Purpose of this Document

The purpose of ARINC Report 803 is to provide design andimplementation guidelines together with a selection guide providinga fiber optic system design engineer with documentation to assessthe design requirements for an aerospace fiber opticinstallation.

The purpose of these guidelines is to assist in theidentification and implementation of design requirements foraerospace fiber optic based systems. The specification alsoincludes recommendations for good practice and aspects of systemtesting.

Appendices to this standard cover the particular case of systemdesign for ARINC Specification 664 compliant networks over a fiberoptic physical layer including an equipment interface specificationto ensure interoperability of ARINC Specification 664equipment.
