Purpose of this Document
This document describes the 724B version of the airbornecomponents of the ARINC Communications Addressing and ReportingSystem (ACARS). This system is intended for use in conjunction withexisting airborne radio equipment to enhance the effectiveness ofair-ground operational control communications. This enhancementaccrues from the abilities of the system to provide air-togroundand ground-to-air data communications. Airlines and other ACARSairborne sub-system users should note that part of any commitmentto the system is the definition of their planned use of its datacommunications capability. Such definitions are needed by both theData Link Service Provider (DSP) on the ground and airborneequipment manufacturers to permit them to generate appropriatesoftware.
The intent of this document is to provide general and specificdesign guidance for the development and installation of theairborne equipment. As such, this guidance will cover the desiredoperational capability of the system and the standards necessary toachieve interchangeability of the hardware. Necessary background tothis is a summary description of the overall system. This may befound in Specification 620, wherein are described both thelink-control-related functions, (i.e., those functions essential tomaintaining the air-ground communications link) and theservice-related functions of the system. While the airbornesub-system must accommodate all the link control functionsin order to be considered part of the system, it need accommodateonly those service-related functions requested (per paragraph oneabove) by the user.
Equipment manufacturers should note that this document aims toencourage them to produce maintenance-free, high performanceequipment. They are at liberty to accomplish this by the use ofdesign techniques they consider to be the most appropriate. Theirairline customers are more interested in the end result than in themeans to achieve it.
