Purpose: This document describes a stand-alone windshear warningsystem (WWS) specifically designed for retrofit installation incommercial type aircraft having primarily analog interfaces. Thesystem is comprised of a basic single airborne element, designatedthe windshear warning computer (WWC), which uses data pertaining toaircraft movement with respect to air movement to detect andannunciate a windshear condition. The system, as an option, mayalso provide instrument guidance to the crew indicating optimumpitch to endure the encounter.
This document provides general and specific design guidance forthe development and installation of a windshear warning system. Itdescribes the desired operational capability of the system and thestandards necessary to achieve interchangeability of hardware.
Equipment manufacturers should note that this documentencourages them to produce maintenance-free, highperformanceequipment rather than that of minimum weight and size. They are atliberty to accomplish this objective by means of the techniquesthey consider to be the most appropriate. The airlines customersare interested primarily in the end result rather than the meansemployed to achieve it.
