Purpose and scope.
This manual provides procedures for the design and analysis ofprotective structures subjected to the effects of conventionalweapons. It is intended for use by engineers involved in designingdeliberately hardened facilities. Users should have a basicknowledge of weapons effects and structural dynamics. Depending onthe type of facility and the threat, the structure may be requiredto protect personnel and equipment against the effects of apenetrating weapon, a contact detonation, or the blast andfragmentation from a standoff detonation. In the last case, if thestructure responds in a predominantly flexible mode, it is assumedthat the element can be represented by a single-degree of- freedom(SDOF) system. Transformation factors needed to represent beams andslabs as equivalent SDOF systems are provided in the manual. If theloading or the geometry of the structure is such that a simple SDOFrepresentation is inadequate to determine response, the analystshould consider using a multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) system or afinite element representation for calculations.
