This Standard specifies a method for testing field-cut preservatives exposed outdoors, out of contact with the ground, in a modified post and rail system consisting of two pieces machined so that one member is supported by the other without the use of hardware.
The test method uses samples with cross sections typical of treated commodities and thus evaluates the performance of the preservative when applied by brush or dip. It is suitable for testing the effectiveness of new or modified field-cut preservatives. Lumber is treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA-C) to create a thin shell of treatment and confine colonization by decay fungi to specific cuts made after treatment. It is pressure-washed or soaked and allowed to dry, then machined into the test pieces. Field-cut preservatives are brush-coated onto the untreated cut wood surfaces.
