This specification prescribes requirements for the classification ofcarbon steel electrodes (both solid and composite) and fluxes forsubmerged arc welding.

This document is the first of the A5.17 specifications which is acombined specification providing for classification utilizing a systembased upon U.S. Customary Units, or utilizing a system based upon theInternational System of Units (SI).The measurements are not exactequivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of theother, without combining values in any way. In selecting rational metricunits, ANSI/AWS A1.1, Metric Practice Guide for the Welding Industry, isused where suitable. Tables and Figures make use of both U.S. CustomaryUnits and SI Units which, with the application of the specifiedtolerances, provides for interchangeability of products in both U.S.Customary and SI Units.

(1) Paragraphs, tables and figures which carry the suffix letter "U" areapplicable only to those products classified to the system based uponU.S. Customary Units under the A5.17 specification.

(2) Paragraphs, tables and figures which carry the suffix letter "M" areapplicable only to those products classified to the system based uponInternational System of Units (SI), under the A5.17M specification.

(3) Paragraphs, tables and figures which do not have either the suffixletter "U"or the suffix letter "M" are applicable to those productsclassified under either the U.S. Customary Units System or theInternational System of Units (SI).

Abstract

This specification provides requirements for the classification of solidand composite carbon steel electrodes and fluxes for submerged arcwelding.Electrode classification is based on chemical composition ofthe electrode for solid electrodes, and chemical composition of the weldmetal for composite electrodes.Flux classification is based on themechanical properties of weld metal produced with the flux and anelectrode classified herein.Other requirements include sizes, marking, manufacturing and packaging. The form and usability of the flux arealso included.

This specification makes use of both U.S. Customary Units and theInternational System of Units (SI).Since these are not equivalent, each system must be used independently of the other.
