Requirements. This standard establishes therequirements for qualification and defines the body of knowledgeapplicable to welding inspection personnel. 

Levels. There are three levels ofqualification: Associate Welding Inspector (AWI), Welding Inspector(WI), and Senior Welding Inspector (SWI). 

Responsibility. Qualification of AWI/WI/SWIpersonnel to the requirements of this standard does not eliminatethe need of an employer to determine the ability of the individualto perform the duties involved in a particular welding inspectionassignment. 

Employer. This standard is intended tosupplement the requirements of an employer, code, or otherdocuments, and shall not be construed as a preemption of theemployer’s responsibility for the work or for the performance ofthe work. 

Terminology Definitions. Asused in this standard, the word shall denotes a requirement, theword should denotes a guideline, and the word may means it ispermissible. As used in this specification the word weldersincludes welding operators, brazers, and brazingoperators. 

Units. This standard does not require units ofmeasure. Therefore, no equivalents or conversions are containedexcept when they are cited in examples.
