INTRODUCTION
This Practical Reference Guide describes the basic operation ofweldment positioners and welding head manipulators and givesinformation on their selection and use. Weldment positioners holdand move a workpiece into the desired positions for welding andother related operations. Welding head manipulators hold and movethe welding head and welding torch as the weld is made. Positionersand welding head manipulators can be used individually and incombination with each other or with other equipment for manual,semi-automatic, mechanized, automated, or robotic weldingoperations. Weldment positioners and welding head manipulators areparticularly useful to reduce operator fatigue, increase weldingspeed, and reduce production time for long weld joints, circumferential joints, and thick joints that require multiple weldpasses. They can help improve productivity, reduce costs, andimprove weld quality.
CAUTION: THIS DOCUMENT INCLUDES GUIDELINES FOR THEOPERATION, SELECTION AND USE OF WELDMENT POSITIONERS AND WELDINGHEAD MANIPULATORS. CALCULATIONS OF LOADS AND FORCES ON EQUIPMENTAND DESIGN OF MOUNTING METHODS FOR EQUIPMENT, TOOLING, ANDWORKPIECES ALWAYS SHOULD BE DONE BY A QUALIFIED ENGINEER OR BY THEMANUFACTURER OF THE EQUIPMENT.
