ISA 12.13.04

This standard provides minimum requirements for fixed andtransportable open path gas detection apparatus.

This standard specifies the construction, performance andtesting of open path (line-of-sight) gas monitors that sense thepresence of combustible gas or vapor concentrations in air.

For apparatus used for sensing the presence of multiple gases,this document applies only to the portion sensing the flammable gasor vapor. Sensing of toxic gases is outside the scope of thisdocument.

This standard addresses combustible gas monitors intended toprovide a broad indication or alarm, the purpose of which is togive warning of possible presence of a potential flammableconcentration of gas or vapor.

Conformance to this standard does not imply suitability for gasmonitoring or monitoring apparatus of the laboratory or scientifictype used for analysis or measurement, apparatus used for processcontrol and process monitoring purposes, or apparatus used forresidential purposes.

This standard specifies the requirements for gas detectionapparatus that are intended to monitor gases or vapors in ambientair by measuring the spectral absorption by the gases or vaporsover an extended optical path. The units of measurement and rangeof the gas detection apparatus are a mathematical integral of thegas concentration along the optical path. The units of measurementare expressed as full concentration of the lower flammable limit(100%LFL or 1LFL) multiplied by the distance, in meters, at thatconcentration (e.g. LFL·meter, %LFL(Avg)).

This standard only specifies the requirements for instrumentapplications where calibration is performed using either the gas tobe monitored or another gas for which response conversion dataappears in the instruction manual
