This report presents abbreviations and fundamental conversionfactors commonly used in manometry, recommended definitions ofpressure in terms of a column of mercury and water, and for a largenumber of liquids, tables of pressures indicated by, or equivalentto, heights of columns at various temperatures. These data have theobject of facilitating and standardizing the use of manometers andU-tubes as direct pressure indicating instruments or in thecalibration of pressure recorders and controllers.
A discussion is included of the more frequent or more importantsources of error in manometric measurements, together withcorrection tables for mercury and water columns. To conform togeneral practice in this country, English units of measurements arelargely used (i.e., pounds, inches, etc.) and with severalexceptions, decimals are used to denote parts of units, rather thanoctonary fractions.
In particular, it will be seen that conversion factors forkerosine, gage oil, alcohol, dibromobenzene, dibromoethane, andacetylene tetrabromide are given only to obtain equivalent watercolumns at 60°F. Further, no conversion data are presented forbenzol, butyl collosolve, carbitol, nbutyl phthalate, orhalowax oil. The filling in of these omissions will have to awaitdemonstrated need.
