General Overview
This Standard covers optical fiber communications cablesintended for installation in underground sewers, specifically stormand sanitary sewers. Materials, construction, and performancerequirements are included in this Standard, together withapplicable test procedures. Additional applicationsbasedconsiderations are discussed as well.
Refer to ICEA S-87-640 for optical fiber communications cablesintended for general outside plant use, ICEA S-110-717 for opticalfiber cables intended for aerial, duct, and buried outdoor andindoor/outdoor drop applications, and ICEA S-104-696 for opticalfiber communications cables intended for indoor/outdoor use.
Applications Space
Products covered by this Standard are intended for use inmetropolitan, urban, and suburban communications networks via useof underground infrastructures, in the last portion of all-opticalnetworks, such as storm and sanitary sewers. These products conveycommunications signals (voice, video, and data) in metropolitannetwork rings and serve as point-to-point connections to thesubscriber’s premises via sewer laterals, in the last portion ofthe optical network.
These products are intended for use in sewer lines, usingman-entry and nonman entry techniques. Such installations areintended to have no adverse effect on the efficiency of the sewersystem. These cables are generally placed manually in pre-installedtrays or conduits or may be secured to the sewer pipe wall by meansof hooks, adhesive beds, sewer pipe liners, or may be tensionedintermittently, in order to maintain the cable and/or conduit outof the flow of the effluent.
The successful application of optical fiber cables in sewersystems requires that all identified maintenance to orrehabilitation of the sewer pipes be conducted prior to cableinstallation, in accordance with procedures under development byASTM1
1 Systems-level work on sewer-based communicationsapplications is the prerogative of ASTM Technical Committee F36 onTechnology and Underground Utilities.
