This Standard specifies the electrical characteristics ofgenerators and receivers that may be employed when specified forthe interchange of binary signals in multipoint interconnection ofdigital equipment. When implemented within the guidelines of thisStandard, multiple generators and receivers may be attached to acommon interconnecting cable.
An interchange system includes one or more generators connectedby a balanced interconnecting cable to one or more receivers andterminating resistors. The electrical characteristics of thecircuit are specified in terms of the required voltage, current,and resistance values obtained by measurements at the equipmentinterconnect points.
This Standard does not specify other characteristics, such assignal quality, timing, protocol, pin assignments, power supplyvoltage, operating temperature range, etc., that are essential forproper operation of interconnected equipment. Any devices complyingwith this Standard shall do so within the ranges of those factorsappropriate for the device operation, such as power supplyvoltages, and ambient temperature. It is intended that thisStandard be referenced by other standards and speCifications thatspecify the additional characteristics necessary to assuresatisfactory interoperation of equipment.
This Standard is compatible with ISOIIEC 8482:1993Information Technology – Telecommunications and informationexchange between systems – Twisted pair multipointinterconnections.
