INTRODUCTION
This document provides test procedures to measure the dispersionpower penalty in a single-mode optical fiber communications system. The power penalty is measured using the maximum dispersion (ps/nm)the system is designed to accommodate as specified by themanufacturer. The power penalty is measured at themanufacturer-specified Bit-Error Ratio (BER) performance level(typically 10-10).
NOTE: To achieve large amounts of dispersion with relativelyshort lengths of fiber, the measurement technique described in thisdocument may involve the use of a fiber having a zero-dispersionwavelength at some wavelength region (e.g., 1310 nm, 1550 nm) thatdiffers from the central wavelength of the system transmitter. Forsystems operating above about 1 Gb/s, this method may not providean accurate measurement of the dispersion power penalty resultingfrom a long length of fiber which has zerodispersion in the sameregion as the system wavelength.
