Chemically accelerated vibratory finishing eliminates wear andcontact fatigue, resulting in gears surviving higher powerdensities for a longer life compared to traditional finishes.Studies have confirmed this process is metallurgically safe forboth through hardened and case carburized alloy steels. Thesuperfinish can achieve an Ra < 1.5 uinch, while maintainingtolerance levels. Metrology, topography, scanning electionmicroscopy, hydrogen embrittlement, contact fatigue and lubricationresults are presented.
