A model to predict friction-related mechanical efficiency lossesof hypoid gear pairs is proposed, which combines a commercialavailable finite element based gear contact analysis model and afriction coefficient model with a mechanical efficiencyformulation. The contact analysis model is used to provide contactpressures and other contact parameters required by the frictioncoefficient model. The instantaneous friction coefficient iscomputed by using a validated new formula that is developed basedon a thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model consideringnon-Newtonian fluid. Computed friction coefficient distributionsare then used to calculate the friction forces and the resultantinstantaneous mechanical efficiency losses of the hypoid gear pairat a givenmesh angle. Themodel is applied to study the influence ofspeed, load, surface roughness, and lubricant temperature as wellas assembly errors on the mechanical efficiency of an exampleface–hobbed hypoid gear pair.
