The use of magnetic Barkhausen Noise Analysis (BNA) has beenproven to be an effective tool for the non-destructive detection ofmicrostructural anomalies in ferrous materials. Used as anin-process tool for the detection of grinding burn, heat treatdefects and stresses, BNA is a quick comparative and quantitativealternative to traditional destructive methods. This paper presentsexamples that demonstrate how BNA is used to evaluate changes inmicrostructual properties. Quantitative results correlate BNA testvalues to X-Ray diffraction values for the detection of changes inresidual stress. Qualitative results correlate BNA test values toacid etch patterns/colors for the detection of grinding burndefects.
