A recent trend has been toward more user friendly products inthe mechanical power transmission industry. One of these productsis a high horsepower, right angle, shaft mounted drive designed tominimize installation efforts. Commonly referred to as “alignmentfree” type, this drive assembly offers quick installation withminimum level of expertise required. It is also more costeffective. These characteristics make this type of drive ideal foruse in applications such as underground mining where there islittle room to maneuver parts. An alignment free drive is directcoupled to the driven shaft only; it is not firmly attached to afoundation or rigid structure. A connecting link or torque armconnects the drive to a fixed structure, which limits the drive’srotational movement about the driven shaft. The electric motor issupported by the reducer housing through a fabricated steel motoradapter; the coupling connecting the motor shaft and reducer shaftis enclosed by this motor adapter. FEA was used to test the castiron housing to determine any potential problem areas beforeproduction began. Once analyses were completed, the motor adaptorwas redesigned to lower stresses using the information from the FEAand comparing it to the infield test data.
