Powder metal (P/M) process is making inroads in automotivetransmission applications because of substantially lower cost ofP/M steel components for high volume production as compared towrought or forged steel parts. Although P/M gears are increasinglyused in powered hand tools, gear pumps, and as accessory componentsin automotive transmissions, P/M steel gears are currently inlimited use in vehicle transmission applications. The primaryobjective of this project was to develop high strength P/M steelgears with bending fatigue, impact, and pitting fatigue performanceequivalent to current wrought steel gears. Ausform finishing toolsand process were developed and applied to powder forged (P/F) steelgears in order to enhance the strength and durabilitycharacteristics of P/M gears, while maintaining the substantivecost advantage for vehicle transmission applications. This paperpresents the processing techniques used to produce Ausform finishedP/F steel gears, and comparative bending fatigue, impact andsurface durability performance characteristics of Ausform finishedP/F steel gears, as well as conventional wrought steel gears.
