Demand for higher reliability, robustness and performance inepicyclical gearboxes have led SKF to develop Design for Six Sigma(DfSS) based simulation tools and methods. This paper willillustrate the advantages of using simulation driven design in thedevelopment of planetary gearboxes for multi megawatt windturbines. The simulation example will show the influence of thehousing flexibility and of the nonĀlinear bearing and gearstiffness on the gearbox performance under transient load. Inparticular the load distribution and deformation of the planetarygears and bearings will be analyzed. The flexibility and accuratestiffness description led to nonĀintuitive results. The geardeformation and load distribution led to significantly differentresults compared to results obtained by using traditionalcalculation tools and methods. A comparison between advanced andstandard calculation methods is given as evidence that advancedanalyses should be used to design reliable, robust and highperforming gearboxes. A virtual design of experiments was used todetermine the most influential parameters affecting the gearboxperformance. This paper will highlight the results of this DfSSstudy.
