Most of the large open gear sets for mining industry aredesigned according to AGMA 6014A06 and AGMA 2001D04. and ratingaccording to AGMA standard (service factor) involve the finaldesign of the pinion such as: material and heat treatment (throughhardening or case carburized pinion), and the finishing process ofthe teeth (to achieve the design geometry). Basically, customerspecification and rating according to AGMA standard (servicefactor) involve the final design of the pinion such as: materialand heat treatment (through hardening or case carburized pinion),and the finishing process of the teeth (to achieve the designgeometry). Moreover, the increase of applied load for a singlemeshing becomes a new challenge. In addition to the mechanicalproperties for the material used and its associated heat treatmentrequirements given in standards, elastic and thermal behaviour andresulting accuracy, as well, have to be taken into account atdesign stage, even for large open gears. Beside designconsideration, such increase of single meshing load cannot beachieved by using conventional manufacturing and quality controlmethods. Therefore, improvements in manufacturing process and inquality inspections for such heavily loaded single large parts, asalready performed for smaller parts in batch are now mandatory toachieve these new design requirements. Based on examples, in thispaper, it is presented such manufacturing and the associatedquality controls improvements from steel fabrication to finalmachining for heavy parts, to ensure the customer that the resultmeets the specification requirements.
