This standard contains information for the design, fabrication, inspection and mounting of bevelgears.
The term bevel gears is used to mean straight, spiral, zerol bevel andhypoid gear designs. If thetext pertains to one or more but not all, the specific forms areidentified.
The manufacturing process of forming the desired tooth form is notintended to imply any specificprocess, but rather to be general in nature and applicable to allmethods of manufacture.
Precision finish, as used in this standard, refers to a machinefinishing operation which includesgrinding, skiving, and hard cut finishing. However, the common form offinishing known as lappingis specifically excluded as a form of precision finishing.
Users should determine the cutting methods available from their gearmanufacturer prior toproceeding. Cutting systems used by bevel gear manufacturers areheavily dependent upon the type ofmachine tool that will be used.
This standard is intended for use by an experienced gear designercapable of selecting reasonablevalues for the factors based on his knowledge and background. It isnot intended for use by theengineering public at large.
