This standard presents the fundamental formula for rating thesurface durability (pitting) of helical and herringbone gear teeth. It contains all of the factors which are known to affect theresistance of gear teeth to pitting. This formula is not applicableto other types of gear tooth surface deterioration such as plasticyielding, scoring, welding, etc. This standard is based onInformation Sheet AGMA 215.01, “Surface Durability (Pitting) ofSpur, Helical, Herringbone and Bevel Gear Teeth,” and iscoordinated with the durability ratings for spur and bevelgears.

Pitting of gear teeth is considered a fatigue phenomenon. Thetwo kinds of pitting – 1) initial, and 2) destructive – areillustrated in Standard AGMA 110.03, “Gear-Tooth Wear and Failure.”Corrective and non-progressive initial pitting is not deemedserious. The aim of this standard is to design the gear teeth sothat destructive pitting does not occur.

Surface durability rating practices for a particular field ofgearing may be established by selecting the proper factors for thisgeneral formula. Proper evaluation of the various factors in thebasic formula will produce suitable ratings for anyapplication.

Where no applicable specific AGMA standard exists, numericalvalues may be estimated for the factors in this general formula andan approximate surface durability rating calculated.

The symbols used, wherever applicable, conform to Standard AGMA112.04, “Gear NomenclatureTerms, Definitions, Symbols, andAbbreviations” and USAS ZI0-3-1948, (RI953), “Letter Symbols forMechanics of Solid Bodies.”
