This standard provides an acceptable practice for the design andselection of components for enclosed gear drives. Fundamentalequations provide for the proper sizing of shafts, keys, andfasteners based on stated allowable stresses. Other components arediscussed in a manner to provide an awareness of their function orspecific requirements. This standard applies to the following typesof commercial and industrial enclosed gear drives, individually orin combination: spur, helical, herringbone, bevel and worm.
Exceptions
The equations in this standard are not applicable when geardrives are subjected to vibratory conditions where there may beunpredictable fatigue failure.
The procedure for design or selection of the specific gearcomponents is varied and complex and is beyond the scope of thisstandard. Designers must refer to the specific rating or encloseddrive standards for this aspect of drive design.
Intended use
The equations and values presented provide a general approach todesign. Deviations from the methods and values stated in thisstandard may be made when justified by experience, testing, or morespecific analysis. It is intended for use by experienced geardesigners capable of selecting reasonable values based on theirknowledge of the performance of similar designs and the effect ofsuch items as lubrication, deflection, manufacturing tolerances, metallurgy, residual stresses, and system dynamics. It is notintended for use by the engineering public at large.
