This standard applies to gearmotors, shaft mounted, and screw conveyordrives defined as enclosedgear drives having spur or helical gearing, alone or in combinationwith straight bevel, spiralbevel or worm gearing. The purpose of this standard is to define arating and selection practicefor these gear drives. Users of this standard are expected to have hadexperience in the field ofgearing and mechanical drive systems.
Gearmotors
A gearmotor is defined as an enclosed gear drive in combination withan electric motor of 0.1kW orlarger, the frame of one supporting the other, with the motor shaftcommon or directly coupled tothe input shaft and parallel, concentric, or at a right angle to theoutput shaft. The output shaftmay be either solid or hollow.
Shaft mounted drives
A shaft mounted drive is defined as a gear drive with a specificnominal output shaft bore size inaccordance with this standard to a maximum of 165 mm.
Screw conveyor drives
A screw conveyor drive is defined as a gear drive with specificmounting and drive shaft dimensionsin accordance with this standard.
Limitations
This standard is applicable to gear drives having single or multiplestage gearing with pitch linevelocities not exceeding 35 m/s for spur and helical gearing and 30m/s for straight bevel, spiralbevel and wormgearing, and component speeds not exceeding 4500 rpm forhelical, spur, straightbevel and spiral bevel gearing and 3600 rpm for wormgearing.Wormgearing operating at slidingvelocities greater than 10 m/s may require special lubricants, pressurized systems or both.
Exceptions
This standard does not cover epicyclic gear drives. This standard doesnot cover the rating ofspur, helical or bevel gears due to wear or scuffing. The design andrating of the electric motoris beyond the scope of this standard.
