When plastic gears are meshed with steel gears there can be thedifferences in thermal expansion between the two materials. If aparticular gear mesh is expected to operate satisfactorily over awide thermal range, the variations in mesh geometry due totemperature must be taken into account. These variable parameterscan pose vexing problems to the plastics gear designer. This paperpresents a straightforward way to consider the shrinkage of plasticgears both in molding and in operation.
