This document sets forth the characteristics of a TerrainAwareness and Warning System (TAWS) – Analog intended forinstallation in aircraft with a mix of analog and digital signalinterfaces. The intent of this document is to provide general andspecific guidance for the development and installation of the TAWSunit primarily for airline use. This Characteristic describes thedesired operational capability of the equipment, the standardsnecessary to ensure interchangeability, form factor, and pinassignments.
Equipment manufacturers should note that this document aims toencourage them to produce maintenance-free, high performanceequipment rather than that of minimum weight and dimensions. Theyare at liberty to accomplish this objective by means of designtechniques they consider to be the most appropriate, as theirairline customers are interested primarily in the end result ratherthan the means employed to achieve it.
