PURPOSE OF THIS CHARACTERISTIC
This Document is intended to set forth the basic requirementsfor a new generation Air Traffic Control Transponder specificallydesigned for lnstal lation in commerciaf trans~ port type aircraft.Although it is acknowledged that the supersonic transport may bringabout as yet undefined requirements on the ATC Transponder System,the performance requirements set forth by this Document areexpected to be fully compatible with SST operatlonal needs.
The intent of this Document is to provide general and specificdesign guidance for the development and lnstal lation of an ATCTransponder system prlmarily for airline use. As such, thisguidance wl I I include the specific requirements necessary toprovide the desired operatlonal capabi llty and the standardsnecessary to achieve interchangeabi I ity.
