Purpose of this Document

ARINC Specification 628, Part 3, consolidates and defines thevarious interface parameters, except for power, that may berequired to support the operation of an In-Flight EntertainmentSystem (IFES) on any airplane model. While the other parts of ARINCSpecification 628 concentrate on the form, fit, and electricalcompatibility of the various IFES equipment, this documentconcentrates on providing a clear definition of all requiredinterface parameters between the IFES and other airplanesystems.

ARINC Specification 628, Part 3 differs in scope from proposedARINC Specification 485, which defines the control signalingbetween the equipment within the IFES. Part 3 also establishes astandard signaling protocol between the IFES and the airplanePassenger Service System (PSS) to manage and control the operationof the passengers reading and call lights.

Historically, different airplane models have provided a uniqueairplane system interface to the IFES. The lack of standardizationin this area has resulted in unique IFES designs for differentairplane models. Unique, proprietary PSS reading and call lightprotocols have been the primary obstacle to accomplishing a”single-electronicsbox” seat design.
