This standard is intended to be applicable to all aircraft loadable software. The standard may impact a variety of software tools including software data loaders, software mass storage devices, software part creation tools, software distribution tools, and software management tools.
This document is not intended to impact the software load process to target Line Replaceable Units (LRU). The protocols for software loading and the resulting software in the target LRU are unchanged.
This document does not define any new formats for software parts, digitally signed software parts, or electronic crates. These are defined by existing standards. This standard defines a way to package various software part formats without changing any of the files defined by existing part format standards. Use of this standard does not require part number changes for packaging of existing software parts into the logical structure.
Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to provide a method for packaging aircraft software parts for distribution using contemporary media or by electronic distribution.
This document defines a logical format structure for the containment of aircraft Loadable Software Parts (LSP) for storage on contemporary portable media, stored on mass storage devices, distributed electronically, and loaded to aircraft equipment without being restricted to the use of a particular portable physical media (e.g., floppy disks, CD-ROMs).
