Purpose and Scope
This document sets forth the characteristics of an advancedFlight Management Computer System (FMS) specifically designed forinstallation in new generation aircraft. The system is alsointended for retrofit in aircraft that presently use ARINC 700series equipment. The advanced FMS is expected to provide expandedfunctional capability beyond that defined in ARINC Characteristic702, and support the necessary requirements for operation in thefuture Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance/Air TrafficManagement (CNS/ATM) operational environment. This includesextensive use of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS),Required Navigation Performance (RNP) based navigation, air toground data link for communications and surveillance, and theassociated crew interface control/display capabilities. Thefunctional requirements defined herein also apply to a FlightManagement Function (FMF) in an integrated modular avionicsarchitecture with software partitions.
The ICAO Future Air Navigation System (FANS) Standards andRecommended Practices (SARPs) for CNS/ATM are currently evolvingand are expected to continue to evolve. The requirements includedin this document represent a best guess at the CNS/ATM relatedfunctions to be supported by the advanced FMS.
This document does not characterize the requirements for aControl Display Unit (CDU). While the CDU is included in theoriginal version of ARINC Characteristic 702, the capabilities ofthe Multi-Purpose Control Display Unit (MCDU) are separatelydefined in ARINC Characteristic 739.
This document defines the functional and interfacecharacteristics of the FMS and assumes that the appropriate MCDUcharacteristics are defined separately in ARINC Characteristic 739Aor elsewhere.
