Purpose: This document sets forth the characteristics of aFlight Warning Computer System (FWCS) intended for use incommercial transport aircraft.
The intent of this document is to provide general and specificdesign guidance for the development and installation of a FWCSprimarily for airline use. It will describe the desired operationalcapability of the system and the standards necessary to ensure thelevel of interchangeability specified in Section 1.4.
Equipment manufacturers should note that this documentencourages them to produce maintenance-free, highperformanceequipment. They are at liberty to accomplish this objective bymeans of design techniques they consider to be the mostappropriate, as their airline customers are interested primarily inthe end result rather than the means employed to achieve it.
COMMENTARY: Alerting devices are provided in aircraft to drawthe flight crew’s attention to the onset of conditions which, ifleft unchanged, could cause operational difficulties or prejudicethe continued safety of the flight. The circumstances in whichalerts are generated are determined from safety and operationalanalyses or are dictated by airworthiness authorities. Typicalexamples of warnings given to the flight crew are: stall warning, configuration warning, landing gear warning, cabin altitude andpressure, VMO/MMO, fuel pressure warning, oil pressure warning andfire warnings.
