Purpose: This document sets forth the desired characteristics ofa Multiple Input Cockpit Printer intended for installation incommercial transport aircraft. The intent of this document is toprovide general and specific design guidance for the development ofthe printer. It will describe the desired operational capability ofthe equipment and the standards necessary to ensureinterchangeability.
Equipment manufacturers should note that this documentencourages them to produce maintenance-free, high performanceequipment rather than that of minimum weight and size. They are atliberty to accomplish this objective by means of the techniquesthey consider to be the most appropriate. Their airline customersare interested primarily in the end result rather than the meansemployed to achieve it.
Up to now, printers installed on aircraft have generally beenconnected to and used only by AIDS and ACARS. These printers are inaccordance with ARINC Characteristic 597 and have only one inputport. With the proliferation of systems providing data to the crew,there is a need for a printer to accommodate multiple systemsefficiently and automatically. This Characteristic describes thephysical attributes, the capabilities and the system interface ofsuch a printer.
